In her latest Hindi play, "Silvatein," theatre personality Shatarupa Bhattacharyya delves into the complexities of romantic relationships, a concept that is considered one of the most intricate for humans to grasp. The play, translated by Puneet Gupta, will be performed at Ranga Shankara today. With ten years of experience in theatre and involvement in around 20 productions, Shatarupa has worn various hats as an actor, director, and production manager. While collaborating with other theatre groups in Bengaluru, she discusses her creative process in crafting plays, her learning journey in theatre, and her insights on contemporary relationships. Explaining her perspective on theatre, Shatarupa shares, "Theatre offers me the opportunity to engage with issues on both intellectual and emotional levels." She elaborates on how theatre has enabled her to navigate relationships by providing a unique space where abstract concepts can manifest in a more tangible manner. Through the cathartic process of dramatization, she has been able to explore relationship dynamics intellectually and emotionally. This journey of writing, staging, and experiencing "Silvatein" has been transformative, offering closure and initiating meaningful conversations. Shatarupa emphasizes the importance of theatre as a platform for fostering dialogues beyond mere facts and statistics. Reflecting on the challenges of modern life and relationships, she notes that the fast-paced nature of contemporary society often hinders emotional connections. Stress and distractions from technology have made individuals less patient and emotionally distant in relationships, fostering a culture of instant gratification. Shatarupa advocates for investing time and effort into nurturing meaningful relationships amidst the demands of modern life. The focus on solving problems with energy is dwindling, making it easier to walk away from them instead. Our fast-paced lifestyles leave little space for deep emotional connections, pushing relationship-building to the back burner. Shatarupa's latest play draws from her own relationship experiences, acknowledging that unhealthy relationships often center on power and control. She explains that the play was inspired by her struggles in failed relationships and the internal conflicts that arose from them. Through self-awareness and open communication, Shatarupa has come to understand the importance of recognizing her emotions, triggers, and needs for personal and relational well-being. By acknowledging how her past experiences shape her reactions, she has learned to approach relationships with patience and empathy, embracing vulnerability as a part of growth and learning from mistakes.
